Why is it important to understand dreams? It has often been said that dream dictionaries are not accurate because what an image means to one person is different to another's. In other words, your personal dreams can't have fixed meaning. To some extent this is true. You may associate dogs for example with companionship if you've always had a view of dogs as such. However, if you're not a dog lover or have had a bad experience with dogs, your meaning will be quite different. It is therefore important to look at both the dictionary (general) meaning and your personal interpretation. What is most important, however, is the emotion associated with the dream. The dream is telling you specifically at this precise time in your life about your current problems and conflicts. Ask yourself what is going on in your waking life that is bringing up these emotions in your dreams.
Are dreams always true? Dreams can warn us of danger and can actually prevent the danger from happening if you heed to the dream. In our subconscious minds we store our intuitions as well as our fears. Whilst we dream our unconscious minds relive these feelings and make us aware of emotions and premonitions we normally would ignore in our waking lives. That's why it's so important to take the dream literally in the sense that if there is danger in the dream (such as falling off a ladder or a car accident) then it's worthwhile investigating what's making us feel unsafe. Check that ladder. Don't Speed. Listen to those dreams on a literal level first. Then, look at the dream at a metaphorical level. If you dream your partner is having an affair, it may not necessarily mean that this is true. However, your dream may be telling you that you are feeling ‘betrayed' or ‘abandoned' by your partner in some way. Once you acknowledge that emotion then you must start examining your life at a conscious level and in an honest way in order to find out exactly why you feel betrayed and more so, how you can address this issue.
Are dreams the opposite of what they seem? Sometimes this is true. Dreams of death, for example are not about anyone dying but are more to do with ‘endings' which then allow for new beginnings. So, it's a good thing to dream of death, no matter how painful it's in the dream. Dreams of sex have little if anything to do with love. People worry about being perverted if dreaming of illicit sexual encounters. Sex in dreams is more to do with being ‘noticed' and being ‘needed' as a way to compensate for fear of being abandoned or just simply ignored.
Does everybody dream? Yes, even animals experience dreams in sleep cycle called REM (Rapid Eye Movement) We only remember dreams if you wake up during or just at the end of your dream, but if you go back to sleep after a dream it will be forgotten by morning. So, it is important to write your dream down as soon as you wake up.
